breast lift

A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that aims to enhance the shape of a patient’s breasts. As time goes on, the natural aging process can cause a woman’s breasts to lose volume and sag. This procedure can help women achieve a firmer, more youthful appearance.

How Is a Breast Lift Performed?

Breast lift surgery is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon under general anesthesia. This is an invasive procedure as incisions are made on the breasts to remove excess skin and reshape the breast tissue. Furthermore, a breast lift will also reposition the nipples and areola to a higher position.

There are multiple surgical techniques that can be performed during a breast lift. The technique used will depend on the amount of sagging, the size of a patient’s breast, and their aesthetic goals.

Below are three common surgical techniques used for a breast lift:

  • Anchor incision - Also referred to as the inverted-T incision, this technique is used for extensive procedures and will have incisions around the patient’s areola. It goes vertically down the lower part of the breast and along the breast’s crease.
  • Lollipop incision - Also known as a vertical incision, the lollipop incision is typically used for moderate breast lift procedures. Incisions are made around the patient’s areola and then down the breast. It does not go along the breast crease.
  • Donut incision - Also known as the periareolar incision, donut incisions are used for mild breast lift procedures as they are made only around the edge of the areola.

Once the incisions are made, the plastic surgeon then lifts the breasts and reshapes the tissue until the desired contour is achieved.

What Are The Benefits of Getting a Breast Lift?

There are many benefits to getting a breast lift, ranging from rejuvenating their breasts to enhancing their overall appearance.

Here are some of the benefits of getting a breast lift:

  • Firmer breasts - A breast lift can tighten the breast tissue, which can result in a firmer and youthful appearance.
  • Better posture - Sagging breasts can lead to poor posture. This is because the weight of the breasts can pull the shoulders forward and down. Reshaping the breasts can help relieve upper body strain and improve comfort in the neck, shoulders, and back.
  • Improved breast symmetry - Breast asymmetry can make it difficult for patients to find clothes that fit. By getting a breast lift, it can help improve symmetry and provide a more balanced appearance.
  • Lower risk of skin irritation - When excess skin and moisture become trapped underneath the breast, it can lead to a rash, irritation, and discomfort, especially during warmer months. Furthermore, it can also increase your chance of developing a skin infection. A breast lift can help improve the airflow and reduce friction by removing the excess skin and tissue.

What Are The Risks of Getting a Breast Lift?

As with any cosmetic surgical procedure, there are risks involved with getting a breast lift.

These risks include the following:

  • Redness, swelling, tenderness
  • Changes in nipple sensation
  • Potential breast asymmetry
  • Increased risk of infection
  • Loss of breast tissue
  • Delayed healing
  • Experiencing an allergic reaction from the anesthesia
  • Difficulty breastfeeding

Before undergoing a breast lift procedure, it is important to discuss these risks as well as any other concerns you may have regarding the procedure. Dr. Trussler will evaluate your medical history and help you make a decision about whether or not a breast lift is right for you.

What Are The Contraindications of a Breast Lift?

Although a breast lift can help enhance the appearance of your breasts, there are certain factors that can disqualify you from the procedure.

These factors include the following:

  • You have an uncontrolled medical condition, such as diabetes and heart disease.
  • You have an active infection.
  • You are obese.
  • You are pregnant.
  • You are currently breastfeeding.
  • You have poor skin elasticity.
  • You are a smoker.
  • You have had breast surgery in the past, such as breast augmentation or reduction.
  • You have unrealistic expectations regarding the procedure.

It is critical that you are transparent about your medical history, lifestyle, and any medical conditions you may have with Dr. Trussler. If you are not eligible for a breast lift, Dr. Trussler can offer you safer alternatives to help you meet your aesthetic goals.
