Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures done today. If you are considering this surgery, you probably already know that it can make you look and feel more confident about your appearance. However, you may be wondering how your body will feel afterward, and whether the sensations in your breasts and nipple area will remain the same.
Additional Sensitivity In The Nipple Area (Hypersensitivity)
When performed by a qualified plastic surgeon who specializes in this procedure, most patients are extremely happy with their breast augmentation outcome, and experience very few, if any, side effects. For some patients, in the days or weeks immediately after surgery, additional sensitivity in the nipple area may be noticed. This is normal, and is due to the stretching of the area near your nerves during the surgery. Fortunately, this extra sensitivity will go away as the tissues continue healing. The risk of extra sensitivity is small, and it is typically not permanent.
Loss Of Nipple Sensitivity (Hyposensitivity)
Another question some patients may ask is whether they will lose nipple sensation or have numbness in that area. Fortunately, this side effect is extremely rare with today’s breast augmentation techniques when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon. In fact, less than one percent of breast augmentation patients experience long-term numbness or loss of sensation in the nipples. If you are undergoing a significant breast lift or breast reduction, however, the risk of this side effect is slightly higher (but still very low). This is because more tissue is being removed or manipulated during this type of procedure.
