What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the skin, which can be controlled with proper awareness and skin care. Rosacea is life-long skin condition that can worsen with age and environment.

  • The main cause of rosacea is sebaceous gland size and activity.

Sebaceous glands can enlarge with aging increasing the production of sebum, which leads to increased oiliness and inflammation. Rosacea and adult onset acne may be difficult to differentiate and the causes and appearance can be similar.

  • Factors that affect rosacea include: hormonal fluctuations, genetic tendencies, lifestyle changes and environmental conditions.

The diagnosis of rosacea requires the presence of sebaceous gland abnormalities plus two or more additional rosacea signs or symptoms.

Rosacea Symptoms

  • Erythema
  • Telangiectasia
  • Oily Skin
  • History of Acne
  • Changes in Skin Texture
  • Thick Skin with enlarged pores
  • Skin sensitivity and irritability
  • Acne-like cysts, granulomas
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Sub-Types of Rosacea

  1. Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea exhibits permanent redness (erythema) with a tendency to flush and blush easily, as well as sensitive skin. It is also common to have small, widened blood vessels visible near the surface of the skin (telangiectasias) and possibly intense burning, stinging, or itching.
  2. Papulopustular rosacea presents with some permanent redness with red bumps (papules); some pus-filled pustules can last 1–4 days or longer. This subtype is often confused with acne.
  3. Phymatous rosacea is most commonly associated with rhinophyma, an enlargement of the nose. Signs include thickening skin, irregular surface nodularities, and enlargement. Phymatous rosacea can also affect the chin (gnathophyma), forehead (metophyma), cheeks, eyelids (blepharophyma), and ears (otophyma). Telangiectasias may be present.

Rosacea Treatments

  • Awareness of lifestyle and environmental triggers
  • Oil and Sebum control
  • Skin regulation with proper general skin care
  • IPL for areas of redness
  • Anti-biotics for acute pustular rosacea
  • Oral and topical medication
