mommy makeover combines procedures to rejuvenate the body and the areas most impacted during pregnancy. While a mommy makeover is not only meant for mothers, it was originally developed for women following pregnancy and childbirth Most commonly, the procedure includes a tummy tuck, a breast procedure, and liposuction, although the procedures involved in a mommy makeover can be adjusted to the individual.

Mommy makeovers are beneficial for helping women enhance their confidence. But how soon can you get a mommy makeover after your pregnancy? Keep reading to find out.

When Can You Get a Mommy Makeover After Pregnancy?

Do You Plan To Have More Children?

The exact amount of time will differ for each person. First, it’s important to ask yourself whether you plan to have more children. Becoming pregnant after your mommy makeover can change your results and may require another procedure to correct.

Are You Breastfeeding?

Another factor to consider is whether you are breastfeeding. Breastfeeding can cause your breasts to continue to change as your body produces milk. Before having any breast procedures, it’s important to completely wean your baby off of breast milk.

Is Your Weight Stabilized?

Your body will also continue to change as your hormones return to normal following your pregnancy. As your body adjusts and returns to homeostasis, you may notice your changes to your body such as weight fluctuations and differences in the the texture and elasticity of your skin. It also takes time for your abdomen to stabilize as it may still be reshaping itself. Therefore, getting a tummy tuck or liposuction would be premature before your weight and hormones have stabilized.

All of these factors considered if you do not plan to have more children, then Dr. Trussler would feel the most comfortable waiting until at least one year after childbirth. By this time, a majority of hormones in the body will have stabilized.

woman in swimwear covering face with hat while sunbathing by the poolWhen you become a mother, a lot of things change. Some of the changes that you will experience are physical. Your breast shape, skin elasticity, and even your pants size might change after you have kids. You may feel dissatisfied with the way your body looks after having kids. Some women need to do things to help them feel more at peace with their bodies. That means doing things like getting some exercise and having plastic surgery to fix things.

Be realistic

Keeping yourself in shape will help you look and feel good after birth. If you’re like celebrity moms who get lots of extra help from professional chefs, personal trainers, or child care providers, trying to make yourself look like someone like them is unrealistic. Be patient with yourself. It may take several months for things to change. Prioritize giving your body the time it needs to heal.

Maintain a healthy diet

Keeping a healthy and balanced diet is important. Going on a juice cleanse or eating more calories than you should is discouraged. Even if you’re eating more than you usually would, breastfeeding can help you lose weight. According to the CDC, most women who breastfeed need 330 to 400 calories daily to meet their nutritional needs.

Get as much exercise as possible

Embrace your new look after having a baby by exercising regularly. It can help you get more energy and relieve stress. It can also help you sleep soundly. Exercise after having a baby can help you build muscle and lose weight. You should get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise every week after giving birth. You may benefit from doing muscle-building exercises such as pilates and yoga.

Plastic surgery may be an option

You shouldn’t expect to lose weight overnight by having plastic surgery. Consider having a mommy makeover if you’re unhappy with your body after your baby’s birth. This cosmetic procedure uses a combination of medical procedures designed to help you look and feel your best after giving birth. Reversing your body shape is possible through plastic surgery and hormone treatments.

Happy cheerful little girl in white dress together with beautiful, sexy momMost patients we meet with to discuss the value of a Mommy Makeover have more questions about recovery and outcome than they do about returning to normal activities. The purpose of a Mommy Makeover is often to resolve the issues that can’t be managed with diet and exercise alone. Still, some patients do feel somewhat antsy about getting back to their workout schedule. This is understandable, especially for very active women or those who had created a strict workout routine in order to achieve their desired results. It isn’t as if one can rest on their laurels after having plastic surgery. However, the matter of exercise after a Mommy Makeover is also a matter of timing. Here, we discuss what you should know as you contemplate your Mommy Makeover recovery.

What is Mommy Makeover Surgery?

Every woman’s body ages in a unique way. Mommy Makeover procedures are known to focus on the areas that are primarily changed by pregnancy and nursing. However, it should be noted that all women who want to combine body contouring procedures can be good candidates for a Mommy Makeover. Cosmetic issues like sagging, deflated breasts, and loose abdominal tissue are not unique to mothers. These concerns can weigh heavily on a woman’s sense of confidence and satisfaction with her body. The Mommy Makeover is a customized series of procedures that correct what troubles a patient the most.

Healing after a Mommy Makeover

It can take the body a total of up to nine months to completely heal after Mommy Makeover procedures. That doesn’t mean you have to wait that long to get back to your normal daily life. You do, however, need to give your body time to adjust. We encourage patients not to expect to pick up right where they left off. The best way to return to a normal exercise routine after a Mommy Makeover is to go slow. Begin at low intensity and work up gradually from there. Very gradually. Doing too much too soon is a recipe for potential post-surgical complications and a longer recovery. Now, how soon this can happen may also vary from one patient to another. Generally, patients should anticipate:

  • Two weeks of relative rest. The only activity that may resemble exercise during the first two weeks after surgery is walking.
  • Beginning in week three, more extensive walking and light cardio may be done. This should always be done slowly and with a keen eye for any discomfort.
  • Beginning in week four, patients may intensify their cardio and may add light strength training.
  • At week six of the postoperative period, most patients can resume the vast majority of their normal working. Even this far into recovery, though, it is necessary to avoid abdominal exercises.
  • Core exercises may resume beginning eight or more weeks after surgery.

Mommy Makeovers are customized procedures that can change your shape, and your life, for the better. To schedule a consultation, contact our Austin plastic surgery office at (512) 450-1077.

We meet with a lot of patients who are interested in learning more about their own custom-designed mommy makeover. While every case is unique and may involve different procedures and techniques, patients often have very similar questions. So, we thought it wise to discuss them here as they may help you as you navigate your way toward your best body.

Should I lose weight before having a Mommy Makeover?

Just about every patient who sees us for a mommy makeover wants to know if they should lose weight before scheduling their procedures. Weight loss can be a frustrating endeavor for any woman, regardless of how many children she’s had or how long it has been since she’s had them. Generally, plastic surgeons prefer to perform body contouring procedures on patients with a BMI, body mass index, below 38. The lower the patient’s BMI in relation to their healthiest body proportions, the lower their surgical and post-surgical risks. Additionally, patients are asked about their personal goals. If there is a goal weight in mind and it has yet to be reached, it is necessary to achieve that goal before having surgery. The reason is that post-surgical weight loss could affect the cosmetic outcome of the mommy makeover.

How soon after I stop breastfeeding can I get a Mommy Makeover?

The scheduling of a mommy makeover is important to the surgical outcome. While it may be tempting to schedule treatment soon after giving birth, it is necessary to wait at least a few months to allow the body to lose weight naturally and also return to a state of hormonal balance. If a woman is breastfeeding, surgery is best performed 3 to 6 months after she has stopped.

When can I exercise after a Mommy Makeover?

Women don’t just want to know when they can resume their normal exercise routine, but when they can have sex, when they can go back to work, when they can hold their children, and more. Basically, the question is “when can I resume my normal life?” The mommy makeover procedure is a significant investment that we want to protect. Rushing back to the gym and other activities can jeopardize the outcome of surgery and also the patient’s health. Generally, patients should take at least one week off work. The more physically demanding the job, the more time should be spent recovering. Exercise typically starts to resume about 4 weeks after surgery and may increase slowly. By 6 weeks post-op, patients typically have full clearance to resume life as usual.

You may have many more questions than these if you’re considering a Mommy Makeover. To ask them, contact our Austin office at (512) 450-1077and schedule a consultation with Dr. Trussler.

Mommy Makeover, TXWhen you look at other mothers, especially those in the public eye, do you ever wonder how they possibly look so good? We may observe some women, like Giselle, and covet their genetic makeup. At the same time, we know there’s something else going on, too. Many of the women who make motherhood look like a breeze in terms of cosmetic appearance have tricks up their sleeve. You can, too.

Today, we hear a lot about the Mommy Makeover process. When we do, we are usually educated on how certain procedures can sculpt the body. Techniques like liposuction and abdominoplasty are great for regaining body confidence, but there’s more to feeling great than correcting concerns like excess abdominal fat. In our Austin plastic surgery office, many moms are considering how a facelift can subtly transform their appearance to revive their energetic vibe.

Benefits of a Facelift

As much as the body changes in response to the hormones of motherhood so do the tissue on the face and neck. A facelift can correct the signs of aging in a way that doesn’t require consistent upkeep. The long-lasting results achieved with a surgical lift may be a primary benefit to be gained from this technique. Moms are busy. They also have a tendency to put the needs of others above their own. Lifting the jowls and restoring a bit of curve to the cheeks improves the vibe of the face for years without the need to constantly plan follow-up treatments.

When a facelift is added onto a Mommy Makeover package, there is also the benefit of cost-effectiveness. Undergoing a minor lift alongside breast augmentation or body contouring means one time under anesthesia, a one-time fee from the surgical facility, and fewer office visit costs. The combination of procedures also saves time in the long run because there is only one recovery period.

A facelift is not only about looking younger. One of the most significant findings in recent studies points out that a woman who undergoes a facelift typically looks friendlier after her procedure. This could be because tissue repositioning in the midface may slightly raise the corners of the mouth and accentuate the eyes without any surgical intervention to the eyelids themselves. A friendly appearance is important to mothers, those whom we expect to show kindness and patients nearly all the time.

Treat Yourself Well

Of all people, it may be most difficult for moms to treat themselves with the utmost care. Undergoing cosmetic surgery may feel overly-indulgent. And yet, it is this very thing that can provide a mother with the resurgence of energy and confidence she deserves.

The addition of a little one to your family is a big event that can mean a lot of small changes in your body. As meaningful and fulfilling as it is to become a mother, physical changes like stretch marks and sagging breasts can feel frustrating. It is not uncommon for a woman to love her new life and wish for the body she had before pregnancy. The mommy makeover process can help a woman fulfill this wish. Austin plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Trussler has performed numerous mommy makeovers over the years. If you’re considering this custom designed protocol, we want you to know all of the essential aspects.

  1. The mommy makeover is one of several puzzle-pieces to a great body. Getting a mommy makeover can mean a dramatic change for your body and your sense of self-esteem. Understandably, you want the results of your treatment to last as long as possible. This is why surgeons encourage patients who will have pockets of fat removed, tissue tightened, and breasts lifted to also develop the lifestyle habits that support these positive changes. It is an excellent idea for a woman to maintain her desired weight for three months before undergoing her mommy makeover.
  2. Beauty Sleep will be your BFF. There’s no way to portray a mommy makeover as a walk in the cosmetic surgery park. This process involves an intensive series of surgeries, each of which would require a few weeks of recovery on its own. It isn’t possible to have a mommy makeover on Friday, rest for the weekend, and be back to Mom-duty on Monday. Patients should prepare themselves for a full week of bedrest before they even begin to feel like resuming their normal daily activities. Significant improvement in comfort and energy occurs over several weeks. During that time, rest is the primary priority.
  3. Oops! You did it again! Doctors do recommend that patients undergo their mommy makeover when they feel confident they won’t have any more children. However, surprises happen. A woman may choose to become pregnant after a mommy makeover without risking her pregnancy. The primary concern related to post-makeover pregnancies is that the results achieved with surgery will be diminished.

Are you ready to start planning your mommy makeover? Let’s talk! Call our Austin office at (512) 450-1077.

What is a mommy makeover?

A mommy makeover is a cluster of procedures designed to be done in one setting, with one recovery, to help reverse the effects of pregnacy and return the body back to – or better than – it was before having children. A mommy makeover should be individualized for the patient; each one is not the same. A mommy makeover commonly addresses the breast and the abdomen, but can include the thighs, hips and buttocks.

One surgery ranges between 3 to 6 hours with a one week downtime recovery, and two weeks until cardio and 6 weeks to core strengthening.

A mommy makeover can typically relieve the frustration from the lingering effects of the pregnancy on the body and the exhaustion of trying to reverse them. Working out, dieting, and sit ups may not reverse these effects and that contributes to the frustration. All of these issues can take its toll on a mother’s self confidence after pregnancy.

Mommy Makeover

Pregnancy can have predictable physical side effects that can have a psychological impact on a mother. It is common for a woman to be frustrated and exhausted with trying to reverse the effects of pregnancy through diet and exercise. Pregnancy has numerous effects on the body, some are reversible like extra weight and breast size and some require surgical treatment like extra skin, sagging breasts, and stretched muscles. Sagging and deflated breast and a prominent abdomen are common after effects of pregnancy, which may not go away with working out and diet. A mommy makeover can reverse these long-lasting physical effects of pregnancy through a predictable cluster of plastic surgery procedures involving the breast and abdomen. This procedure can not only improve form but can boost self confidence as well address functional core strength issues.

Common complaints of woman inquiring about a mommy makeover

  • My belly looks pregnant though I am not

Why: because the abdominal central fascia or linea alba has been stretched and has not recoiled. This called a diatstasis recti which will malaligns the core and makes it difficult to tone the central abdominal muscles. No amount of situps or crunches will correct this leading to the frustration of returning to a pre-pregnancy form. Multiple babies, twins,  large babies, significant weight gain, during pregnancy, babies in short succession (Irish twins), all contribute to the degree of abdominal laxity and excess skin.

The abdominal component of a mommy makeover will typically repair a diastasis recti which can help to align the muscles and flattening the abdomen.

  • My breasts were huge during pregnancy and now they are smaller and sagging

Why: during pregnancy the breasts enlarge and engorge with milk production. This stretches the ligaments and skin of the breast. After pregnancy and breast feeding the ligaments and skin may not recoil leading to sagging and the breast tissue shrinks leading to loss of volume. Sagging can be corrected with a breast lift or mastopexy, and volume can be replaced with a breast implant. These can be combined and included in a mommy makeover.

  • I have stretch marks that will not go away

Why: stretch marks are a sign of permanent damage to the skin and the effect of it being stretched so much that it will not recoil. Stretch marks do not respond to creams or cutaneous energy like lasers, but can be removed with excisional surgery such as a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty which can be part of a mommy makeover.

  • My C-Section scar is indented and the fold shows through my clothes

Why: skin laxity around the scar can cause the skin to hang over the C-section scar. A tummy tuck incision will be placed at or below the c section scar eliminating the deformity.

  • My nipples are too big and are difficult to cover

Why: pregnancy and breast feeding will expand and stretch the areola and the nipple. The areola diameter can become wider making it difficult to cover as well the nipple length can increase making them prone to show through clothing and be vulnerable to irritation. The areola can be decreased in diameter with a breast lift and the nipple can be reduced in length with a nipple reduction.

  • My belly button is now an outie after having kids

Why: the belly button or umbilicus can be stretched just like the fascia and can be a site of a hernia or hole in the abdominal wall. The hernia typically forms during pregnancy and often does not go away after giving birth. The bulge is typically a piece of abdominal wall fat stuck in the hernia. An umbilical hernia can be performed at the time of a tummy tuck and helps to reshape the belly button.

Mommy MakeoverPregnancy and childbirth change your shape, there’s no doubt about it. For some women, it seems like they can easily bounce back from this life experience. In other cases, restoring the tautness of the midsection and perkiness of the breasts seems all but impossible. Without a little help, this may actually be a true statement. This is why many women do get help in the form of a Mommy Makeover. If you are wondering what cosmetic plastic surgery could do for you, read on.

Reshape the Breasts
Breasts may grow several sizes during pregnancy, and then remain full during months of breastfeeding and continually fluctuating hormones. After life, and biochemistry, has settled into a new norm, the breasts may be left without the fullness you have come to appreciate. One aspect of the Mommy Makeover can be to lift the breasts, or to enhance their shape with implants. Patients of Dr. Trussler can choose between traditional saline or silicone implants, or the innovative new Gummy Bear Implant design.

Restore a Smooth Midsection
Tummy tuck surgery and / or liposuction are integral to the Mommy Makeover process. Liposuction can be performed alongside the tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, in order to remove excess fat cells that are lingering around the midsection, hips, buttocks, and back. The tummy tuck removes excess skin, and it also tightens lax muscles against the abdominal wall. This procedure does more than improve appearance; it can also decrease the risk of hernia and improve urinary incontinence.

Better Body Contours
All in all, the general idea behind a Mommy Makeover, or any body-shaping procedure, is to create symmetry and balance among all parts of the body. Losing pregnancy pounds is only one aspect of getting the shape you desire. Stubborn fat and loose muscles can be an enormous challenge that keeps you from feeling your best. With a little nip and tuck, the pounds and the inches can be decreased for good.

We would love to talk with you about your options for a custom Mommy Makeover treatment. To schedule a consultation in our Austin cosmetic plastic surgery practice, call 512-450-1077 .

The term “Mommy Makeover” is a layman’s title for the surgical rejuvenation of the abdomen and breasts after a mother has finished child bearing. During pregnancy the abdomen and the breasts both stretch and increase in volume. This can be accentuated with weight gain during this time and can lead to permanent damage to the skin indicated by the presence of stretch marks. After delivery and after the completion of breast feeding, the abdomen and breast return to their normal state however the skin and underlying subcutaneous ligaments may be permanently damaged leading to excess abdominal skin and sagging, loose breasts. As well the abdominal muscles may be stretched out permanently, which can accentuate the lower abdominal bulge and is referred to as a diastasis recti. A diastasis recti is commonly seen in conjunction with an umbilical hernia or fat in the belly button.
All of these problems can be corrected, though this does entail an operative procedure in the form of a cosmetic breast and abdominal procedure. The Mommy Makeover typically is a combination procedure which is conveniently performed on young mothers so that recovery and operations are limited to a one time period. The operation may include a breast augmentation with breast implants, a breast lift or a combination of a breast lift with breast implants. The abdominal procedure may include just a repair of the diastasis recti which can be performed through two small abdominal incisions with the use of an endoscope, or a mini-tummy tuck (mini-abdominoplasty) or full tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) which removes excess abdominal skin and tightens the abdominal muscles. The abdominal procedures are typically combined with liposuction of the hips and abdomen to improve contour in this area.
A Mommy Makeover patient usually stays overnight for monitoring and to allow for some recovery. Typically the recovery is limited to 2 to 3 weeks depending on the combination of procedures, and allows for the return to cardiovascular workouts in 3 weeks and heavy lifting in 6 weeks. The procedure is designed to individually correct the effects of pregnancy on a woman’s body while limiting the recovery after one operation and encourage the return to an active young family in a month.
Mommy Makeovers are an individual procedure and the recommended combinations should be discussed during the pre-operative evaluation. Each mother will leave the initial consultation with the reassurance that they will be able to return to and improve on their pre-pregnancy figure.
