Jeuveau is a new facial rejuvenation treatment that has been getting much attention lately. But what makes Jeuveau different from other treatments on the market? Let’s look at how Jeuveau stacks up against other popular rejuvenation treatments.

What’s Jeuveau?

Jeuveau is a new injectable treatment approved for temporarily improving adults’ moderate to severe frown lines. It contains botulinum toxin type A, a protein derived from bacteria. Jeuveau is produced by the same company that makes Botox, but it is a newer product on the market.

When Did Jeuveau Come Out?

The FDA approved this treatment in February 2019 and launched it in May of the same year to treat moderate to severe frown lines in adults.

How Does Jeuveau Work?

Jeuveau works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause frown lines. It is injected into the muscles with a fine needle, and the results typically last for 4-6 months.

Is Jeuveau Safe?

Jeuveau is a safe and effective way to reduce the appearance of frown lines, and it has minimal side effects. If you are considering injectable treatments for frown lines, Jeuveau is an excellent option to consider.

How Long Before I See Results?

After Juvéderm injections, you will see immediate results and improvement over the next week as any swelling and bruises subside.

Facial Rejuvenation: Jeuveau Versus Others

With knowledge of Jeuveau’s workings, how does it compare to other facial rejuvenation techniques?

Jeuveau vs. Botox: Both treatments consist of botulinum toxin. Jeuveau is a newer treatment and is said to be more effective and have fewer side effects than Botox. Jeuveau is also cheaper than Botox.

Jeuveau vs. Juvederm: Both treatments are injectable fillers. Jeuveau consists of a different type of material than Juvederm, which some say makes it more effective. Jeuveau is also said to last longer than Juvederm.

Jeuveau vs. Kybella: Both treatments are injectable and destroy fat cells. Jeuveau is said to be more effective than Kybella and to have fewer side effects.

Dr. Trussler and his staff are here to answer any questions you may have or to schedule a Juvéderm consultation. If you would like to schedule an appointment, please call our office at (512) 450-1077. Make today the day you start looking and feeling better!

When we talk about or hear about facial attractiveness, we often focus on a few primary features. It is well-known that the eye is8 naturally drawn to either the mouth or the eyes first, then to other parts of the face. What we don’t often recognize is how all the parts fit together in the creation of harmony. As we age, this harmony can be disrupted due to changes in volume in the upper regions, including the cheeks. When the fatty tissue that pads the cheekbones begins to degrade, the face looks not only wider at the bottom but also looser and saggier with jowls. One of the ways to restore a more youthful shape is to increase cheek volume with Juvederm Voluma. Here, we discuss why more people are turning to dermal fillers like Voluma for cheek enhancement.

What Is Juvederm Voluma?

Juvederm is a large family of dermal fillers. What began with one product is now several, and Voluma is the first in its class to be made primarily for cheek augmentation. While all Juvederm fillers are made with hyaluronic acid (as are the Restylane products that we use), Voluma is manufactured with precisely-sized particles of this acid to make it more structural. The viscosity of Voluma is designed for injections into deeper layers of tissue, where it can augment the cheeks without making the face look puffy. In addition to cheek augmentation, Voluma may be appropriate for use at the cheek/eyelid juncture known as the tear troughs. Here, the product can smooth the transition line and eliminate the appearance of under eye bags.

How it Works

It is the hyaluronic acid in Voluma that produces changes in the skin. This naturally-occurring chemical is integral to smooth, plump skin. It hydrates and lubricates various body parts by binding to water molecules. One particle of hyaluronic acid can hold one thousand molecules of water. The use of hyaluronic acid presents a convenient and safe mechanism of rejuvenating facial tissue. Patients appreciate that they can see the results of their injections immediately. Side effects are mild enough to resume most normal activities right after treatment, with the exception of any activity that puts pressure on the face. Patients also appreciate that the results of their Voluma treatment can last up to two years before the signs of aging recur.

We’re about to enter into one of the busiest times of year. Make sure you’re ready! Contact our Austin office at (512) 450-1077 to schedule your dermal filler treatment.

Face LiftToday, the vast majority of people who seek facial rejuvenation express an interest in non-surgical modalities. Perhaps the most popular of them all include the various dermal filler products that are available at this time. Injectables serve the purpose of reducing wrinkles. Some do so by relaxing muscles that pull on the skin. Some do so by increasing volume in the deeper tissue beneath creases. Some, like Sculptra, work in a completely different manner. Here, we provide details about Sculptra and another popular product, Juvéderm, to help you see how they compare.

About Juvéderm

We see many people for Juvéderm treatments. This family of products is one of the most well-known fillers of our time. Juvéderm products correct the signs of aging by adding volume. Volume comes in the way of water. This is possible because Juvéderm is made of hyaluronic acid. The body naturally makes this substance but in smaller and smaller amounts. By adding hyaluronic acid beneath the skin, Juvéderm draws water molecules into the area. These molecules are trapped in place by the hyaluronic acid particles and gradually decrease over the months. Common uses of this filler include undereye bags, creases between the nose and mouth, nose reshaping, and lip or cheek enhancement.

About Sculptra

Like Juvéderm, Sculptra is also an injectable product. It is not intended to achieve the same results as its counterparts, though. The idea behind Sculptra, made with poly-L-lactic acid, is to stimulate cells in the dermis to naturally make more collagen. We know collagen as the protein that builds strong hair and nails. It is also an essential foundation for firm, supple skin. Early in adulthood, production slows nearly to a stop, which is why the face changes shape so profoundly over time. The poly-L-lactic acid in Sculptra creates a reaction to bring more collagen where needed.

About Results

Both Juvéderm and Sculptra achieve excellent results. However, one does so more quickly. When we administer Juvéderm, we see improvements develop in real-time. Patients leave our office looking and feeling fantastic. When we administer Sculptra, it is with the understanding that results will build gradually over a series of injections. It’s like aging backward. Some people want those immediate results and others like the idea of a subtle rejuvenation. Juvéderm results can last anywhere from a few months to 2 years. Studies have shown that Sculptra results last at least two years.

There is no perfect filler that can address every sign of aging. That’s why it’s nice to have options. To explore the options available in our Austin office, call (512) 450-1077.

Over the past several decades, men and women of a certain age have been known to get a little help from their plastic surgeon. For some time, facelift surgery achieved results that screamed “I had work done!” As a result, more people began choosing to live with the signs of aging rather than alter their face into a windblown look. This all changed when dermal fillers and other injectables became available. Alongside advances in nonsurgical treatments, cosmetic procedures aimed at rejuvenating the face have also improved. These steps forward in aesthetic medicine have led to the common question about whether fillers or a facelift is “better.” We think this may not be the real question at all.

What a Facelift Can Do

Facelift surgery is a procedure in which the tissues that make up the deep plane of the face, those that lie over the bony structure of the cheeks, are manually repositioned. It used to be that a facelift was a facelift. That’s not the case anymore. Today, facelifts are tailored to the individual to correct age-related concerns such as:

  • Jowls
  • Double chin
  • Neck bands
  • Marionette lines
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Loose, sagging skin in the mid-face area

What Injectables Can Do

Injectable products are used to reduce dynamic wrinkles that develop on the upper face and smooth tissue in the lower face. Some work by releasing muscle tension and others by adding volume to superficial tissue.

Injectables are beneficial for the subtle correction of:

  • Frown lines
  • A mildly drooping brow line
  • Nasolabial folds and marionette lines
  • Thin, deflated lips
  • Undereye bags
  • Flattening cheekbones

The whole idea of rejuvenating the face with periodic injections is genius, really. However, it is important to know what the limitations are. Just as we’ve seen the potential for a facelift to go wrong, we’ve also learned that it’s possible to over-do it with Botox and dermal fillers.

What we’ve found in many cases is that injectables and facelift surgery go together. A facelift cannot do everything that injectables can do, such as filling in the cheeks. Conversely, injectables cannot do what a facelift can do, such as getting rid of excess, loose skin. To discover more about what a facelift and injectables can do for you, call (512) 450-1077 and arrange a visit to our Austin office.

It’s inevitable. We’re all going to age. The big question these days is how quickly each of us will do that. Aging is much more controllable now that we have scientific data to tell us the various factors that contribute to concerns such as crackling joints, degraded vision, and wrinkled, sagging skin. In our Austin office, we routinely help people manage cosmetic aging utilizing injectable treatments.

As the area of nonsurgical facial rejuvenation has grown, we’ve come to realize that it’s difficult for patients to keep up. Here, we discuss the various injectable options that may be considered to help you achieve your desired outcome from treatment. The more you know, the more confident you can feel about your choices. Still, our experienced team is here to make the most appropriate recommendations after consulting with you about your concerns and objectives.

BOTOX®

The Mother of all injectables, Botox is known for its quick action on dynamic wrinkles. If your face has begun to look sad or angry due to a sagging brow line or you’re tired of wearing a permanent scowl, Botox may be the ideal solution for you. This drug, as well as Dysport and Xeomin, relax the muscle contractions that cause wrinkles for 3 to 6 months at a time.

KYBELLA®

Kybella is the long-awaited injectable that can destroy the unwanted fat that accumulates beneath the chin. You know the fat, it’s commonly known as the dreaded double-chin. Injections of Kybella introduce a fat-disrupting acid (deoxycholic acid) into the expanded tissue. As the acid is absorbed, it destroys the cellular membrane around fat cells. This tricks the body into eliminating them for good.

JUVÉDERM®

It may not be accurate to only use the name Juvéderm to describe this comprehensive family of products. Under the general name are several individual dermal fillers, all comprised of hyaluronic acid. Juvéderm fillers include Voluma, which can augment the cheeks, Volbella, which can enhance the lips, and several other products that are excellent options for reducing lines and deep creases around the nose and mouth.

RESTYLANE®

Restylane, like Juvéderm, also plumps the skin and underlying tissue with hyaluronic acid. Similarly, the Restylane family also has a number of fillers. Each is designed to meet specific needs, such as softly adding volume to the lips or increasing contours with a more robust formulation of hyaluronic acid.

SCULPTRA® AESTHETIC

Sculptra is a unique injectable that is popular for its immediate and long-term effects. Initially, Sculptra adds volume beneath the skin in the form of Poly-L-lactic acid, a powerful alpha hydroxy acid. Over time, the product gets absorbed, but not before it stimulates a prolonged increase in collagen production.

Botox and Fillers, Austin, TXSince Botox gained FDA approval in 2002, our appreciation for injectable beauty treatments has continued to expand. Whereas the botulinum toxin on which Botox is based was initially used as a medical therapy, the wide range of injectables we use today revolve around making the face and hands look younger. In fact, we have become so familiar with the mechanics of injectables, how they work, that we are now using them to fight the signs of aging and also to prevent them.

Botox and Dermal Fillers: BFFs for your Face

As much as you may have heard the terms “dermal fillers,” “injectables,” and “Botox,” you may question why there are so many options and whether or not they all essentially do the same thing. They don’t, especially when we’re talking about Botox and dermal fillers. The beauty of these two major categories of injectables is that they are wonderfully complementary.

Botox is the injectable that is used when muscle movements have created a state of persistent contraction. A furrowed brow is a prime example of this type of problem. Because we use certain muscles frequently, they become overly tight. This can lead to lines between the brows. It is muscle contraction that also leads to a downturned mouth, crow’s feet, and sagging eyebrows. The protein in Botox attaches to the neuroreceptors in the muscle so they do not contract to the same degree they would otherwise. This results in smoother, younger looking facial features.

Dermal fillers have a completely different purpose than Botox. These products often made with hyaluronic acid, are intended to add volume. Fillers can add volume beneath a line or crease to move tissue up to the surface, eliminating the wrinkle. Fillers also add volume to the lips and cheeks and to certain types of scars. The way fillers do this is by attracting water molecules into the tissue and then holding them there for months.

Typically, injectables are used when a noticeable line or crease has developed. In recent years, younger patients are obtaining treatment to diminish the appearance of dynamic lines, too. Dynamic lines are those that are visible during facial movements, such as forehead creases when you raise your eyebrows. By injecting small amounts of Botox into these lines, it is believed it will take longer for them to become permanently etched on the face.

We are proud to serve the Austin area with surgical and non-surgical treatments that refresh the face and body. To learn more about injectables like Botox and Juvéderm, call (512) 450-1077.

Kybella® Austin, TXThere are several factors that can cause a dreaded double chin. The accumulation of fat cells in the area just beneath the chin may relate to genetics, to weight, or to the natural aging process. You may know exactly what caused your double chin, but that’s not what matters most. Whether you can thank your last birthday or your mother for this problem, what matters is that you find the right solution to submental fullness, or extra fat cells framing your face.

Kybella is a recent advancement in aesthetic medicine that has been developed specifically for the correction of submental fullness. It differs from surgical methods of neck rejuvenation in that treatment involves a series of injections. Treating a double chin with Kybella versus surgical fat removal and/or neck tightening does require more visits to our office, but there is no need for anesthesia, which means no need to take time away from work and other activities to recover.

We should point out that, while there is no real downtime needed for tissue healing, as there may be with surgical treatment for a double chin, Kybella patients are likely to notice swelling in the upper neck after appointments. This is because a fair amount of deoxycholic acid is introduced to the submental area to break fat cells down for metabolism. Swelling is not usually physically uncomfortable, but it may make some people slightly self-conscious. For this reason, we may suggest that injections occur before the weekend.

The minor disadvantages of Kybella, swelling and mild tenderness, are perceived as tolerable compared to the downtime needed after surgery. Kybella is an excellent treatment option for men and women who do not want to commit to a few weeks off from work, incisions and surgical risks, and the expense of surgical double chin treatment.

Ultimately, fat cells that are targeted with Kybella are destroyed for good, paving the way for improved confidence. If you’ve been considering treatment for submental fullness, take a closer look at Kybella. We are happy to schedule a consultation with you in our Austin office. After a brief visit with Dr. Trussler, you will have all the information you need to make a confident decision regarding treatment for that double chin. Call (512) 450-1077 for scheduling assistance.

Dermal Fillers Austin, TXThere are so many treatments aimed at rejuvenating the face that they can all meld together at some point in your research. This is an area of beauty in which the more you learn, the more frustrated you may feel. Essentially, the goal of rejuvenating the face isn’t so straightforward. To determine which treatment or treatments may be right for you, it is beneficial to begin by identifying what needs to change. This is why a consultation with a board-certified cosmetic surgeon is so valuable. We’re happy to speak with you about your concerns and goals. Just give us a call at (512) 450-1077.

Here, we want to look at two popular ways to bring new energy into the face using injectables.

Filling in Volume

Over time and with the performance of thousands of facelifts, it became apparent to those in the beauty business that there is much more to aging than wrinkles and sagging. One of the primary problems that occur with age is that we love volume in certain areas of the face. This discovery is what led to the development of facial fillers.

Synthetic facial fillers such as Juvéderm are formulated with naturally-occurring substances such as hyaluronic acid. In the instance of a hyaluronic acid dermal filler, the mechanism that creates change is the attraction of water molecules. Once water has been drawn into the area of treatment, such as smile lines, hyaluronic acid binds to them and holds them in place for several months. Other fillers, such as Sculptra, work by creating a scaffold beneath the skin that gradually increases collagen stores for better-looking contours. Still, results are temporary.

Using Fat for Contouring

In recent years, fat transfer, or fat injections, have become increasingly popular. This method of facial rejuvenation harvests fat cells from another part of the body and introduces purified cells into the areas of the face that need a boost, such as the cheeks or temples. This technique requires a minor liposuction procedure to obtain fat, but recovery usually only lasts a few days.

Making the Comparison

  • Fine lines and wrinkles improve with both facial fillers and fat transfer. Some lines are best treated with a neuromodulator such as BOTOX.
  • Facial volume in the mid face, chin, and other areas can be similarly improved with either fat or fillers.
  • Downtime after dermal fillers is zero. Patients may want to take 1 or 2 days off for fat transfer due to mild soreness in extraction and injection sites.
  • Results are immediate after each of these treatments. However, it is normal for a degree of absorption to occur after fat transfer, so contouring is likely to change somewhat over several weeks.
  • To obtain the desired outcome, some patients may need more than one fat transfer treatment.
  • Dermal fillers absorb naturally over several months’ time. This can range from a few months to two years. The results of fat transfer are permanent.

Dermal Fillers Austin, TXCosmetic treatments like breast augmentation and injectables for facial rejuvenation have become so common in recent years that it’s easy to think we know just about everything there is to know about what we need to look the way we want. It’s interesting what can happen when we have so much information at our fingertips. In contrast to knowing more, we find that the wealth of details about plastic surgery that is out there can actually confuse patients.  Here, we point out how this commonly happens.

Do I even need plastic surgery?

Here’s a big one, thanks to the many, many injectables now used to smooth lines and wrinkles. Because we can fill lines and fill in the cheeks with dermal fillers, the idea that this is always appropriate has developed. Let’s take a step back for a moment and look at how this works.

Dermal fillers and neuromodulators are great for the reduction of mild to moderate complaints such as frown lines and deflated cheeks and lips. Facial aging is, by and large, related to the atrophy of tissues in the mid face. However, there is only so much filler that you can inject into the cheeks, temples, and undereye bags before the face starts to look, well, filled with filler! In the past few years, we saw actress Courtney Cox open up about the way that fillers deteriorated her natural look, and saw her natural features take on new beauty as her fillers were dissolved.

The point: Sometimes, a surgical lift is a better option for facial rejuvenation.

Just Take the Fat Out, Please

A common request from women we meet is that we perform liposuction on their midsection so their taut figure can be seen. Liposuction is an excellent method of removing excess fat, that has been proven. However, what surprises a lot of women – and even some men – is that their stomach needs a little more help if it is going to be flat and tight as they imagine. This is especially true among women who have had children because it is only natural that the abdominal muscles have been stretched beyond the norm.

The point: Liposuction is appropriate for fat removal in a number of areas of the body. However, if anything more than mild laxity in skin and underlying tissue exists in the midsection, a tummy tuck may also be warranted.

These are just two examples of misperceptions related to what may really be necessary to obtain the desired outcome from cosmetic care. To fully understand what is needed to help you love your look, schedule a consultation with Dr. Trussler in our Austin office. (512) 450-1077.

Party time skin careThe holiday season is one of joyous busyness. We shop and wrap, cook and visit with friends and loved ones. With additional “face time,” it is only natural that the holidays present us with the desire to look and feel our best. If you have any concern about being camera-ready this season, know that it’s not too late to schedule the reviving skin treatment that will bring out the best in your appearance.

Because we are weeks away from holiday parties, now is probably not the best time to contemplate the value of a good cosmetic surgery procedure, like a neck lift or blepharoplasty. For more lasting cosmetic improvements, visit us after the holidays. For now, look at how we can address issues of concern with minimally invasive or completely non-invasive treatments.

Bring your Brow up with Botox®
One of the biggest concerns we hear from our patients is how their eyes have become heavier over time. This is because the skin on the forehead, including the brow, is pulled down by a muscle just below the brow line. A quick Botox® treatment can release muscle tension in the right areas to relieve you of heavy, hooded eyes. In cases where the upper eyelid has become extremely lax, Botox® treatment will only lift the brow, and may make a slight improvement to the sagging upper eyelid. However, this treatment is a great way to get through the holidays until an eyelid lift can be scheduled!

Fill out the Lips with Restylane® Silk
Over time, the border around the lips can lose its definition. Lips lose volume, creating vertical lines around the mouth. These concerns can be corrected quickly, with minimal discomfort, using the ultra-smooth Restylane® Silk dermal filler.

Plump Flat Cheeks with Voluma®
Shapely cheeks are an important feature of the youthful face. Until recently, the substantial loss of volume in the cheek area has been a challenge. Not many people consider having implants inserted into this area! Fortunately, that isn’t necessary. The Voluma® hyaluronic acid filler has been developed specifically for the correction of mid-face volume loss.
These in-office treatments take only a short time to complete and they require no down time. In a single visit, you can have your face fully rejuvenated for the entire holiday season.
