Doctor plastic surgeon makes marks with a felt tip pen for plastic surgery to correct male breast, close up. GynecomastiaAccording to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, an average of 65 percent of men between 27 and 92 years of age have experienced gynecomastia. Despite it being so common, it is still a source of insecurity for many men. It may even lead them to feel embarrassed in social and intimate settings. Gynecomastia surgery, or male breast reduction, removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin. Patients can achieve a sculpted chest that is more traditionally masculine, enhancing their confidence. Find out if you’re a candidate for this procedure today.

What is Gynecomastia?

The overdevelopment of male breast tissue is known as gynecomastia. It is most often caused by a hormonal imbalance between testosterone and estrogen. Generally, men will have higher testosterone levels, but estrogen levels can increase breast tissue growth if they become imbalanced. Other possible causes include obesity, puberty, and age.

What To Expect During Gynecomastia Surgery?

A gynecomastia procedure can be done in a few different ways depending on the results you are trying to achieve.

In the case that fatty tissue is the main cause, liposuction can be used to remove the excess fat. However, if glandular tissue is the primary contributor, the fat and tissue must be removed.

If there is an excess amount of skin after the fat and tissue have been removed, a qualified surgeon will remove it to ensure the chest appears tight and toned.

The surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis and under general anesthesia. Overall, surgery time may last one to three hours, depending on your treatment goal. The surgery produces lasting benefits as long as you maintain a healthy weight through your diet and physical activity.

Who Is a Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?

The ideal candidate for a gynecomastia procedure is:

  • Generally healthy with no underlying medical conditions.
  • Insecure due to an excess of fat or tissue in the breasts.
  •  Of a healthy, normal weight.
  • A non-smoker.
  • Has realistic and positive goals for their procedure.
  • Has found other gynecomastia treatments ineffective.

Many men who consult with a surgeon about gynecomastia surgery have already tried to reduce breast size with diet and exercise at the very least. It makes sense, then, that most men who schedule gynecomastia surgery want to know what they can expect after their procedure. Of particular interest is the issue of resuming a regular workout routine. We understand the intensity of this desire. Having enlarged breasts takes a toll on a man’s emotional wellness. Even with a surgical solution, there may be a belief that working out is a must to achieve the best results. There is some truth to this, but it is nothing to rush.

Recovery Takes Precedence

Our primary concern for men who have undergone gynecomastia surgery is that they can heal well. Healing is a waiting game during which the best thing the patient can do is rest. This can be a difficult task, especially when so much work has previously gone into maintaining fitness. However, one of the first post-operative instructions patients must adhere to is avoiding strenuous exercise. Too much movement too soon can cause stitches to re-open. Increasing the heart rate too much too soon could increase the risk of swelling and bruising and diminish the quality of healing.

When Exercise Resumes

When resuming exercise after gynecomastia surgery, it is imperative to take things slowly. Many men feel tight in the chest area after their procedure. This may be due to the stitching of incisions. The best way to get back into a workout routine is to walk. Patients may walk casually (not briskly) as soon as they feel comfortable after surgery. A slow to moderate pace may be kept up for 15 to 30 minutes a day at first and can continue daily for the first two weeks of recovery. If pain occurs when walking, the activity should stop for the day. Also, when walking, the compression garment applied after surgery should be worn.

After walking, patients may resume exercise with stretching and calisthenics such as leg lifts and arm lifts. Stretching may include slow, gentle movements of the arms overhead and bending forward at the waist, as well as from side to side. Leg lifts are performed lying on the side with one arm stretched straight up and the other supporting the body. Lift one leg 3 to 6 inches off the ground and hold for thirty seconds. Repeat on each side. Arm lifts are performed in a seated position using 3- to 5 lb weights and lifting the hands to be perpendicular to the body.

After stretching and calisthenics have been continued for two weeks, patients may add in light cardiovascular exercise. Low impact cardio is gentle but can still provide a good workout. Examples of suitable exercise include brisk walking, riding a bicycle, or working on an elliptical trainer. A follow-up visit takes place about one month after surgery. At that time, additional exercises can be discussed based on the progress of recovery.

Today’s topic is an important one. Men of all ages are living with shame and embarrassment due to a problem they may believe they brought upon themselves. We want to shed light on the issue, and offer hope for those affected by gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia
is a condition in which the male breast becomes enlarged. Some people refer to excess tissue as “man boobs” or “moobs.” Any way you put it, the emotional impact of having a less masculine physique can be enormous. This problem may begin to develop during the teen years or anytime thereafter. In many cases, an affected male may feel that he is responsible for his own torment; that he must lose weight or work out more to rid himself of the fatty deposits that plague him.

The truth is that gynecomastia often has nothing to do with weight or with muscular structure. The condition has more to do with the enlargement of glandular and or fatty tissue around the breast. A man who attempts to solve his physical woes with diet and exercise may obtain greater health, which is never a bad thing, although the desired trimming effect may not come to fruition.

Problems with self-image are not easy to overcome. We understand this, and encourage men affected by excess breast tissue to stop blaming themselves for their condition.

One flat, male chest, please!
When you recognize the physiological reasons that gynecomastia develops, you can lighten up on yourself. Furthermore, it becomes easier to identify the right solution to regain confidence in your body.

The goal in treating gynecomastia is to obtain a flatter chest. Until recently, men had very little information through which they could achieve this goal. Today, there are multiple surgical techniques that may be employed to remove excess glandular and fatty tissue from the male breast. Dr. Andrew Trussler holds board certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery as well as the American Board of Surgery with a specialized background in cosmetic procedures. He is a wonderful resource for men in the Austin area who want permanent results from a safe procedure.

You needn’t live with the embarrassment of gynecomastia. This condition is not your fault! More importantly, a solution exists in the office of your experienced plastic surgeon, Dr. Andrew Trussler. Call 512-450-1077 for a private consultation.

Male chest contouring is increasing in popularity. One of the most difficult steps is discussing your options with an experienced plastic surgeon. Most agree that liposuction plays a large role in male chest contouring and the surgical treatment of male gynecomastia, however there are men with excess breast tissue and excess skin likened to a females sagging breast. No matter what type of liposuction is used: ultrasonic, laser assisted, or standard liposuction there will not be adequate skin recoil or tightening to take up the skin excess. For these men with excess skin and excess tissue, an upper body lift may be offered which removes skin through a lower chest incision, repositions the nipple, and re-contours the central and outer chest. The advantage is it is a one stage procedure which completely corrects the effects of male gynecomastia and/or massive weight loss. The down side is that it does involve a larger incision and a longer recovery. Patient satisfaction is extremely high when performed on the patient who is healthy with realistic expectations. Dr. Trussler in Austin, Texas has significant experience with all types of male chest contouring, including the upper body lift. The first step in treating male gynecomastia and improving the contour of the chest is discussing your options during a consultation.
